Red Rocks Conservation Area
What it is
A peaceful, off‑the‑beaten‑path woods + rock‑formation preserve on Cape Ann. A short 1 mile hike that leads up a small rock face with scenic views of Gloucester from afar, and Cape Ann.
Why we love it
Easy to moderate hike — wooded paths lead to a rocky scramble up to an exposed vista with nice views of the ocean and Gloucester.
Quiet and low‑crowd compared with more popular parks. A great calming nature escape for wedding‑weekend guests.
Offers a mix of forest, rock, and marsh/coastal vibe if you wander a bit — varied scenery makes it interesting for a casual walk or photo stop.
Trailhead / Parking
2 places to park / access. Search google maps for “Red Rocks Trailhead”
Park directly on Rt 133 / Essex Ave by the underpass, there is space for 10-20 cars and the trailhead is directly in front of them.
Halibut Point State Park
What it is — A must see! A rugged Cape Ann coastline getaway: granite‑quarry cliffs, tide‑pools, rocky ledges, ocean views, and a walking trail that mixes natural beauty with historic charm. Great for a relaxed outing, photos, or a coastal adventure.
Why it’s a must-see
Stunning ocean & quarry-ledge views — on a clear day you can see far out to the water, with waves crashing against rugged granite coastlines.
Easy, accessible trails and tide‑pool access — the main loop is ~1.7 miles, gentle terrain, and great for all ages (families, couples, friends).
Rich history — formerly a granite quarry (granite used in many regional buildings), plus a WWII-era fire‑control tower and museum about the area’s maritime and quarry past.
Perfect for a half‑day outing: sights, tide‑pool exploring, a historic walk — and picnic‑friendly if you bring snacks.
